bringing you closer to nature…
With only 468 sqkm, Andorra is a small country. We could easily place it inside a 22×22 km square. Even so, Andorra is a country with big mountains. Average mountain height in the Andorran territory is almost 2.000 metres. It’s the 5th country in the world with the highest average. It has more than 70 summits that exceed 2.500 metres height and around 80 high mountain lakes. Once the snow is gone, we can find the ideal place for hiking.
We will also enjoy three huge protected environments: Sorteny Valley natural park, Comapedrosa valley natural park and Madriu-Perafita-Claror valley –this last, World Heritage by UNESCO.
… and also to culture
Besides, not everything is hiking in Andorra. The country has a wide cultural heritage. Among others, 21 romanic churches and a net of museums (20 in total), a reflection of the life, habits and traditions forged by the Andorran society along the centuries. All this, together with the fact that Andorra has been an independent country for more than 800 years, provides it with a unique own culture, differenced from its environment. Due to these reasons, and some others, this is a must-see visit. The respect for nature, environment, culture and traditions of the country will be transmitted by the ANDORRA WALKING FESTIVAL. This walking and culture festival aims that, with the help of the mountain and cultural guides, all of them qualified and from the area, you’ll be able to discover, know and enjoy this GREAT country.
Leaving from Soldeu following a path that goes across the Incles Obaga forest, and, going up circa 200m gradient, you’ll get to the Planell Gran (“Big plain”), a place traditionally used for stockbreeding.
From this point onwards, always inside a black pines and firs forest, you’ll get down to the end of the Incles valley.
Accompanied by the guides, you’ll visit this beautiful valley, returning to Soldeu along the Obac way. Find a family-friendly hike in Incles Valley..
Heading to Vall del Riu mountain refuge, we will go across subalpine stage forests, where we will enjoy spectacular views from Valira d’Orient valley and from Grandvalira ski resort.
When going down, we will search the Vall del Riu river, located at the end of the valley, crossing the bridge and following the path that will take us to Armiana abandoned village, vestige of ancient mountain life in the past.
Going out of the village, a strong descent will take us to Canillo, where we will finish the excursion, next to Sant Joan de Caselles beautiful romanic church.
The beginning of the excursion follows the same path as level B up to the botanical garden.
As of this point, we will walk along the end of the valley, next to the river, getting to Sorteny manned mountain shelter. From there, after a short climb, we will get to Quer plains. It’s a widely open plain, which connects Sorteny and Rialp valleys.
A strong descent will take us down to Rialb wide valley, a perfect example of a glacier origin valley.
Once we get to the end of the valley, a nice walk will take us again to the starting point.
As in the other levels, we will start the day with the visit to the viewpoint of the Roc del Quer. After this visit, we will take the interparroquial tomb de les neres way which leaves from coll d’Ordino.
This way has the peculiarity of passing through four of the seven parishes that the Principality has. The excursion lasts for three hours, and the whole time we will be walking inside the forest and maintaining the height, between 1.900 and 2.000 m, something that makes this outing very pleasant and easy to perform.
The initial forest belongs to Canillo; then, we will go across Encamp land, with excellent overviews to Engolasters lake and the Pardines way. As a highlight, the return to the starting point goes along a forest that belongs to the Ordino parish (municipality), with trees up to 24 metres height.
We will start this outing backwards from A and B. We will start and end in Engolasters lake. First we will climb GR-11 up to coll Jovell, where we will enjoy the panoramic overview over the city and, in coll Jovell, we will also enjoy a viewpoint over Madriu valley, with spectacular views over its forests.
From coll Jovell we will go down, following a shadowy way that goes along a magnificent firs and pine trees forest, full of moss and silence, in order to arrive to the Closa fountain, quite close to Sant Miquel d’Engolasters. At this point, we will cross the road to go by some mountain houses (bordes), and follow the way that will take us back to Engolasters lake. Once we get there, we will surround it and we will end up at the exit.
From Grau Roig ski resort car park we will have to climb +200m gradient to get to Pessons First lake.
From here on, we will take, at the beginning, the GR7 path, which crosses Pessons glacier cirque through its main axis.
The descent will pass through the Solana lakes. Therefore, we will have the opportunity to visit 6 or 7 lakes along the route.
As mentioned before, today we will enjoy a spectacular high mountain landscape.
